Org. Setting and Reporting

The internship is located in the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) at Vienna, Austria. The position is for a period of six months starting in August 2020. Given the current situation due to COVID-19, interns who will be selected will have to start working remotely from their country of nationality/residence until the international travel restrictions are lifted and access to the Vienna International Centre can be granted.

The internship is UNPAID and full-time.

The intern will work five days per week (40 hours) under the direct supervision of the Chief of the Office.

Responsibilities

The intern shall undertake the following duties which may include, but are not limited to:

•Support the substantive work of the Office and its cooperation on disarmament and non-proliferation, as well as a security culture, particularly in coordination with Vienna-based organisations;

•Participate in meetings/conferences/seminars and prepare meeting reports;

•Participate in the planning of specific UNODA projects (i.g., meetings, workshops, conferences and training courses);

•Contribute to the preparation of background documents, presentations, summaries, talking points and speeches;

•Conduct research on political and legal aspects of disarmament and non-proliferation;

•Perform other tasks as necessary.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

•Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent). (OFFICIAL WRITTEN PROOF FROM THE UNIVERSITY SUPPORTING ONE OF THE ABOVE POSSIBILITIES MUST BE ATTACHED TO THE INSPIRA APPLICATION);
•Be computer literate in standard software applications;
•Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
•Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

1.Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. Are you a student in a Bachelor’s (final year), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have you completed a degree and are able to commence an internship within a year of graduation?

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset.

United Nations Considerations

According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity. Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.
