Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Information Centre as part of the Department of Global Communication and Strategy Division internship (DGC) invites you to be part of an internship programme during 2020.

This internship position is based at the United Nations Information Centre for the Caribbean Area, which is located in the city of Port of Spain. UNICs are the principal sources of information about the United Nations system in the countries where they are located, they are also responsible for promoting greater public understanding of and support for the aims and activities of the United Nations by disseminating information on the work of the Organization to people everywhere, especially in developing countries. The incumbent is under the direct supervision of UNIC’s Director and/or the National Information Officer (NIO). He or she reports to the NIO of UNIC Port of Spain.

The internship is UNPAID and full time. This internship is available for 2 months with the possibility of extension for a maximum of 6 months depending on the needs of the office and availability of the candidate. Interns work five days per week (35 hours).

Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the Director and NIO of UNIC for the Caribbean Area, the daily responsibilities will depend on the individual academic background and interests. Internship
assignments will focus on supporting the production of written and audio-visual content and products for the website, online platforms and outreach programme of this UNIC.
Duties may include, but are not limited to:Assist in the production and delivery of information communications products and services;
Assist in the development and updating of internal databases, data-sharing and collaborative platforms.
Assist in the researching and compiling of basic information, and drafting of text, for use in the production of communications material about the UN.
Assist coordination of UNIC photographic records: produce digital imaging, write captions for UN photos, as required.
Assist preparation of material for, and participate in, meetings, briefings hm, and consultations with internal and external partners to develop communications activities.
Assist in the logistics coordination, writing, editing, post-production and distribution of UNIC multimedia material and products, including: participant communications, production material (cue
cards, production lists, scripts etc.), selection and cataloguing of audio and visual materials.
Assist in development, updating and maintenance of UNIC online (web site and social media) platforms, including: drafting and editing of content; assisting implementation of strategies designed
to widen to UNIC's on line audiences. Performs other duties as assigned.

Meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
(a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
(b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent);
(c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
In addition, applicants must be computer literate in standard software applications; have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes the willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

Applicants must be a student in a Bachelor’s (final year), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme. Languages

English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For this internship fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.

Special Notice

This internship is an unpaid assignment. Interns will be required to cover full time working hours, for a minimum of 2 months up to a maximum of 6 months. Part-time schedules may be arranged depending on requirements.

United Nations Considerations

According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity. Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.
